The advantages of a gearbox in an electric drive

For reasons of cost and weight, manufacturers have so far tried to do without gearboxes in electronic drive units. However, it is now clear that an electric drive, which is characterized by a wide speed range and a reversible direction of rotation, definitely benefits from the integration of a gearbox.

An electric motor-gearbox unit has various advantages. For example, a more energy-efficient drive solution can be realized by using a central electric motor. The increase in the consumption map then has a positive effect on the range of the vehicle. Integrating a transmission is particularly worthwhile for vehicles that travel at high speeds and also require high tractive forces. This applies to light commercial vehicles, for example, but also to state-of-the-art sports cars. In any case, high-quality gearing components remain essential for durable and reliable transmissions.

Our production processes are always accompanied by state-of-the-art measurement technology, both in the initial phase with prototypes and in pre-series and small series production. This means that no need for corrections is overlooked and the full optimization potential is exploited. This prepares you ideally for large-scale production, in which all necessary aspects must be implemented without compromise.

A frequent step here is tooth flank grinding. In this work step, the tooth geometry can be significantly optimized with the help of ultra-modern machines. This is important because electric motors work very quietly and any gear noise would otherwise be clearly perceptible. Electric drives with a quiet and low-vibration gearbox are therefore essential.

The grinding process takes place in the course of hard finishing, which is carried out after hardening in our in-house hardening shop. A wide range of corrections can be made here to reduce noise development and thus ensure pleasantly quiet drives with very smooth running. We also test which corrections are actually effective and look at each project individually. Achieving the maximum is a matter of course for us.

Projects that we have already accompanied

Ilmberger has been involved in a number of projects with various transmission manufacturers in recent years. From comparatively small gears for pedelecs (electric bicycles) to components for e-projects for German sports car manufacturers and heavy commercial vehicles, we have been able to demonstrate our expertise in practice on several occasions.

1. tooth flank grinding and correction of the tooth geometry

We have a very flexible profile grinding machine that can make numerous corrections to components and thus ensure particularly effective optimization. We carried out tooth flank grinding for a major automotive manufacturer from southern Germany as part of an e-mobility project. This work step concludes an approximately 30-stage production process and is decisive for the smooth running achieved.

2. complete production of a wheel set for commercial vehicles

We produced a complete wheel set in-house for light commercial vehicles in the delivery sector. Such vehicles cover many kilometers and have to remain in use for a long time. In addition, they are used in residential areas, which makes quiet drives all the more necessary. Here we laid one of the foundations for the further development of modern vehicles that will influence the future of an entire industry.

3. production of a wheel set for sports cars

The implementation of maximum forces plays an important role with regard to electric sports cars. Smooth running, precision and high load-bearing capacity are also at the heart of the production process when manufacturing a complete wheelset for a purely electric super sports car. We supported a major sports car manufacturer from southern Germany with our experience and produced a wheelset.

4. support for the development of fully electric buses and trucks

We are currently examining the plans of a German manufacturer for large commercial vehicles in the logistics and public transport sectors to determine their potential for series production. We are making adjustments and will produce the first prototypes of our transmission gears and shafts for the company after a careful preparation and coordination phase.

5. production of components for internal transport vehicles

For a long time now, we have been producing components for electric drives for small special vehicles that are required as logistics and transportation aids within companies or public buildings such as airports. The manufacturer offers electric vehicles as well as tractors and remote-controlled trailers, which makes the range of applications for the drives particularly diverse and requires absolute reliability.
